Sandwich Plate System — strong, light and lasting structures for stadiums and beyond

Structural composite

Sandwich Plate System

At the forefront of prefabrication and offsite manufacturing, SPS Technology’s Sandwich Plate System (SPS®) is a strong, light and lasting alternative to conventional stiffened steel and pre-cast concrete.

For over twenty-five years, SPS Technology has designed, engineered, and fabricated on a global scale across multiple sectors. From world-class sports stadiums to offshore FPSOs, our team uses SPS to deliver solutions in environments that demand more.

ENGO Kazakhstan represents SPS technology in Kazakhstan — from stadium terraces and decks to bridges, buildings and special structures.

Developed together with BASF

The Elastocore™ elastomer core was created in partnership with BASF. SPS has been developed for over 25 years and is used in projects worldwide.

SPS technology in action

How the Sandwich Plate System is built and why engineers and architects worldwide choose it

Why SPS

Stronger and lighter than steel or concrete

The I-beam principle in two dimensions, prefabrication and a long service life

Extreme Versatility

From fluid forms to bold angles, SPS is transformable and easily customised to virtually any shape. Our composite can reach where other materials can’t and can be customised.

Exceptional Efficiency

SPS operates on a similar principle to an I-beam but in 2D. Bending moments generated by pressure loads are managed by the faceplates, which are set apart by the elastomer core.

Positive Impact

For the same capacity, SPS terraces, floors and decks are up to 40% lighter than other conventional materials like concrete. This means that all other supporting structures have to carry smaller loads.

Impact Protection

The composite panels are very efficient at spreading out loads from impacts and blast events, making SPS more efficient than conventional materials as it engages a larger area to resist the loads.

Lightweight load-bearing stadium structures

Less weight — less load on supports and foundations

  • Terraces, decks and floors up to 40% lighter than concrete
  • Removable and reconfigurable sections for multi-sport arenas
  • Ready-made modular panels — fast on-site installation
  • Lower loads on load-bearing structures and foundations
  • Used in stadium conversions for the FIFA World Cup 2026
  • Corrosion resistance and a long service life

About the technology

The History and Evolution of SPS

Sandwich Plate System has a rich history spanning three decades, with roots in addressing challenges in the offshore industry. Originating as a response to the limitations of conventional stiffened steel and pre-cast concrete, Sandwich Plate System has become the cornerstone of construction innovation, contributing to the creation, enhancement and retrofitting of structures across diverse industries.

Our SPS timeline showcases a journey from the pioneering use of concrete core sandwiches in 1992 to the cutting-edge solutions provided by the SPS Technology team today.

We develop and deliver innovative first-of-type applications across all of our markets and have a proven track record of delivering complex projects on time and on budget.
